WVU Fire Service Extension receives professional reaccreditation

MORGANTOWN, W.VA. — While many summer camps conjure up images of camping, outdoor activities and classes, the West Virginia University Fire Service Extension is offering a camp for brave teens to address a shortage of volunteer firefighters and cultivate the next generation of emergency responders.

WVU Extension Service encourages firefighters, first responders to attend West Virginia Weekend at the National Fire Academy
Each year, firefighters, first responders and other emergency personnel respond
to thousands of emergencies, national disasters and other incidents. WVU Extension
Fire Service continues to provide outreach, education and training opportunities
to these professionals to ensure they are prepared to handle these difficult
situations.
The National Fire Academy (NFA) will host West Virginia firefighters and emergency personnel on May 4-5, 2019, in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Dubbed “West Virginia Weekend,” the two-day academy will feature courses on training operations in small departments; strategy and tactics for initial company operations; decision-making for initial company operations; and fire investigation. WVU Extension Fire Service assists NFA with recruiting attendees and coordinates registration for the event.
WVU Extension Service partnership trains oil and gas industry workers
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University Safety and Health Extension has partnered with Pierpont Technical and Community College to provide OSHA Education Center courses to students interested in the oil and gas industry through a host organization relationship.
Students can complete a series of courses in the oil and gas industry track to earn a certified safety specialist certification, receive OSHA certificates and industry-specific certifications for a comprehensive approach to safety and health duties and responsibilities in the oil and gas industry.

But, with that revitalization, there’s a need for community leaders to step up to the helm to guide and maximize those efforts.

WVU Fire Service Extension provides free fire training during West Virginia State Fire School
Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia State Fire School is returning this year to ensure that West Virginia’s firefighters, from volunteer to full-time, get the most up-to-date training and certifications to keep their towns and communities safe. Best of all, it’s free to those firefighters that meet individual class prerequisites.
Hosted and organized by the West Virginia University Fire Service Extension, the school runs from Friday, Dec. 1 to Sunday, Dec. 3 and will take place in the Morgantown area. Organizers claim the school is an opportunity for growth for all firefighters, with classes that cover everything from self-contained breathing apparatus to helicopter firefighting.
WVU Fire Service Extension urges students to put fire safety first
Morgantown, W.Va. – While classes on many local college campuses are getting underway, the West Virginia University Fire Service Extension urges students to take basic steps to get used to their new dorms and apartments so that in the case of a fire, they’ll be safe.
The National Fire Protection Agency reports that across the nation, fire departments respond to more than 11 dorm fires a day, and every campus-related fire fatality reported nationwide in the last five years has been in off-campus housing.

WVU Extension Service offers flood recovery tips for gardeners and farmers
Morgantown, W.Va. – Floods have far reaching effects that
extend past the immediate damage and danger that high water presents at the
crest stage. In addition to the clean-up efforts afterwards, there are
agricultural considerations for the home gardener and farmer with livestock.
The West Virginia University Extension Service has resources
available and residents affected by flooding can get in touch with their local WVU Extension Service office
for additional information about how to handle their land, plants and animals
after a flood event.

Fairgoers can celebrate WVU’s 150th at 2017 State Fair of West Virginia
Morgantown, W.Va.— Fairgoers can play games and activities at West Virginia University exhibits, learn about WVU Extension programs and celebrate WVU’s 150th birthday at the State Fair of West Virginia, Aug. 10-19 in Fairlea, West Virginia.
The WVU Building is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the exception of Thursday, August 10 when the building opens at 2 p.m. (official start of the State Fair) and the final day of the fair when the building closes at 5 p.m.

WVU Fire Service Extension increases firefighter training with new, mobile equipment
Morgantown, W.Va. – Firefighters across the state will soon be able to better handle a variety of emergency situations as the West Virginia University Fire Service Extension expands their footprint by bringing new, mobile equipment and training to volunteer units in rural communities.
According to Mark Lambert, director of the Fire Service Extension, the ability to reach more firefighters directly in their communities addresses a critical, unique training need for the majority of West Virginia.
