West Virginia University Extension Service Fire Service Extension announced that its Junior Firefighter Camp previously slated for June 26-July 1, 2021, has been canceled.
“Our first priority is the safety and health of our campers, families, volunteers and staff,” Mark Lambert, director, WVU Fire Service Extension, said. “And, given the current coronavirus restrictions regarding overnight camps, we will be unable to hold the 2021 Junior Firefighter Camp.”
The camp staff and volunteers know how much campers look forward to this experience each year, and they are equally disappointed about the cancelation. Rest assured, planning is already underway for the 2022 Junior Firefighter Camp. After a two-year absence, the camp staff and volunteers will be ready to provide the best camping experience yet for next year’s campers.
“We have witnessed the positive impact this camp has on the recruitment, retention and quality of the next generation of firefighters,” Brian Grieco, adjunct instructor for the WVU Fire Extension Service and camp commander, said. “Know that this pandemic has not lessened our passion for Junior Firefighter Camp.”
Additionally, the WVU Fire Service Extension staff is exploring opportunities to bring youths together for programming in fall 2021. If it is possible for alternative events to be held, those dates will be announced in mid-summer.
Students who have already paid for the 2021 Junior Firefighter camp will be contacted in the coming weeks regarding a refund or payment toward next year’s camp. For immediate questions about a refund, contact 304-269-0875.
