Youth "Travel" to Italy

The first of four international cooking classes was held January 28, 2019 at the Wayne County Extension Office. Youth learned about the country of Italy and how to make homemade pasta and bruschetta! Youth got to use a "blender bike" to help chop up tomatoes for the bruschetta. To learn more about 4-H opportunities, please contact our office at 304-272-6839.

Youth "Travel" to South Africa

The second of four 4-H International Cooking classes was held on February 4, 2019. Youth "traveled" to South Africa and learned how to make several ethnic dishes. Youth that are participating in this four week class series include (l-r, front row): Grayson Smith, Addy Smith, Josie Parsley, Marah Christian, Jenna Adkins and in the back row (l-r): Ashlee Bell, Alyssa Lambert, Benton Hall, Conner Hall, Duke Parsley, and Danielle Adkins. Youth "Travel" to South Korea

The 4-H International Cooking Class "traveled" to South Korea on February 11, 2019! Youth learned how to make sushi rolls, did a blind taste test of several different rices, learned about rice production in the United States, and got to write their name in Korean.

Seeking Volunteers for Reality Store Program

The Wayne County Extension Office will host several Reality Store program sites this spring. They include:

Reality Store is a financial simulation that allows youth to improve their understanding of "real life" or the monthly expenses and bills that occur an average household. Our office is seeking volunteers to manage one of the nearly 20 stations that students visit during the simulation.

4-H'ers Compete in State Air Rifle Competition

Wayne County 4-H members competed in the West Virginia 4-H Air Rifle Competition in Morgantown on January 26, 2019. Chase Smith and Andrew Kelly made the top four out of 20 competitors and will represent the county and state at the National 4-H Shooting Sports competition in Nebraska this June. Chase Smith placed first in the state competition and also set a new state record with a score of 521. Other placings include: Andrew Kelley in 2nd place with a score of 517; Alex Hall in 6th place with a score of 474; Breanna Crockett in 7th place with a score of 473; and Kelton Creed in 12th place with a score of 450. Ayden Copley placed 6th out of 10 competitors in the Junior Division with a score of 393.

Coaches and competitors include (l-r): Tim Smith (Coach), Andrew Kelley, Chase Smith, Bruce Crockett (Coach), Ayden Copley, Kelton Creed, Breanna Crockett, and Alex Hall. The 4-H Shooting Sports program has a long-standing tradition in Wayne County. It started back 2005 and has featured many successes for youth and coaches over the years. Recruiting Mentors & Community Coordinators

This spring, Wayne County will be looking to secure Mentors and Community Coordinators for its five Energy Express sites during the summer of 2019. Energy Express is a nationally-recognized literacy and nutrition program. Community Coordinators and mentors either recruit, train or supervise volunteers to assist Energy Express children during reading, writing, art, drama and non-competitive recreational activities. The selection process begins March 1. Apply online.
