In January 2019, the Wayne County Extension Office delivered winter cards to the residents at the Wayne Nursing Home. 4-H members made over 70 cards in December as a community service project, in an effort to deliver some good cheer in January.

Wayne County 4-H members competed in the West Virginia 4-H Air Rifle Competition
in Morgantown on January 26, 2019. Chase Smith and Andrew Kelly made the top four
out of 20 competitors and will represent the county and state at the National 4-H
Shooting Sports competition in Nebraska this June. Chase Smith placed first in
the state competition and also set a new state record with a score of 521. Other
placings include: Andrew Kelley in 2nd place with a score of 517; Alex Hall in
6th place with a score of 474; Breanna Crockett in 7th place with a score of 473;
and Kelton Creed in 12th place with a score of 450. Ayden Copley placed 6th out
of 10 competitors in the Junior Division with a score of 393.

The 4-H Shooting Sports program has a long-standing tradition in Wayne County. It started back 2005 and has featured many successes for youth and coaches over the years. This spring, Wayne County will be looking to secure Mentors and Community Coordinators for its five Energy Express sites during the summer of 2019. Energy Express is a nationally-recognized literacy and nutrition program. Community Coordinators and mentors either recruit, train or supervise volunteers to assist Energy Express children during reading, writing, art, drama and non-competitive recreational activities. The selection process begins March 1. Apply online.

Wayne County will have five Energy Express sites for the summer of 2019. The sites will include: Ceredo-Kenova, Buffalo Elementary, Crum PreK-8, East Lynn Elementary, and Fort Gay PreK-8.
The 4-H Ambassadors stand with a quilt block that was completed in the last month. This quilt block will join the Wayne County 4-H Heritage Quilt Trail. The teens present include (l-r): Chase Smith, Zara Harold, Sarah Ferry, Brenna Barnett, Kelton Creed, and Cameron Cade, missing Conner Hall.
The 4-H Ambassadors held their monthly meeting on January 15, 2019. They worked on a promotional video for the 2019 National Association of Extension 4-H Agents (NAE4-HA) that will be held at The Greenbrier November 3-7 to help showcase a few of the great things about Wayne County, WV. They are among teens across the state, creating unique videos about their county while promoting the 2019 conference.
Members of the 4-H Ambassadors (Erin Ferry and Conner Hall) met with the Wayne County Commissioners to learn more recycling efforts in the county, given their interest to help expand these efforts. The WVU Extension Service Wayne County Office started the 8-week long computer science program on January 4 at Lavalette Elementary with the 4th and 5th grade classes. Through this program, youth will learn basic computer science principles in a hands-on and engaging way. To learn more about this program, please contact our office at 304-272-6839.
The Wayne County Regional Qualifier was held January 5. Results will be known at a later in January once targets are scored. Many thanks to all our coaches for their dedication and
commitment over the past several months of weekly practices.
