Wayne County 4-H News

It is that time of year for youth from Wayne County to register for camp. This year you will register online to attend one of our three 4-H camps! We hope this will make it easier on you to register your child for 4-H camp this summer.

This month 4-H Health Officers are encouraging club members to limit screen time by putting down the phone, tablet and TV remote, and going for a walk instead. In the end, your body will thank you. What activities do your club members enjoy during screen-free time?

The 2018 Wayne County 4-H Day was held on April 3 and featured one PowerPoint entry, one Visual Presentation entry, five Public Speaking entries, two Talent Show entries, nine photography entries and three cookie bake-off entries.

Seven youth completed a 4-H Project on sewing on Thursday, April 5, 2018. The youth did several hands-on activities including pillow cases for a travel size pillow. These projects will be on display at the 2018 Wayne County Fair.

The Wayne County 4-H Program is recruiting volunteers to serve at any of our three 4-H Camps this summer. Adult volunteers play an important role in the Extension programs. Volunteers coordinate local community clubs and help to plan and conduct local, regional, state and national events. Over 500,000 teen and adult volunteers share their time and talents with youth across the state each year.

Wayne County had four 4-H members participate in the 2018 State 4-H Teen Leader & Charting Weekend. Teens have an opportunity to take various educational classes and participate in leadership activities. The teens who attended include (l-r): Zane Smith, Zara Harold, Sarah Ferry, and Chase Smith. Our 4-H Horse Judging Team had one of their final practices on April 2, 2018 before the State 4-H & FFA Horse Judging Contests on April 14 at Potomac State. They focused on oral reasons. The team will meet again on Monday April 9 to answer any questions and review details about the trip to the state contest. Many thanks to Dave McGill, WVU Extension Service Forestry Specialist who spent April 2, 2018 with the Wayne County Junior Forestry Team. He taught them compassing, pacing, how to measure a tree and how to evaluate a forest. The team will compete in the state forestry contest in May.
