WVU Extension celebrates new beginnings in Cabell County

Representatives from WVU, Cabell County Commission, and Cabell Board of Education pose together after the ribbon cutting for the new Extension office.

West Virginia University Extension, which operates in all 55 counties in West Virginia, is strengthening its service to Cabell County by welcoming a 4-H Youth Development agent and opening a new office location for the community earlier this month.

Officials from the University, Cabell County Commission and Cabell County Board of Education, along with 4-H members and volunteers, Master Gardeners and members of the community, recently gathered together to commemorate the newly relocated office with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Days before the ribbon cutting, Drew Strader began his role as the newest 4-H Youth Development agent to serve the county.

“There was an excellent turnout from our community for the ribbon cutting, and we’re grateful for the partnership of the Cabell County Commission and Cabell County Board of Education to help us make this move happen,” Strader said. “As a 4-H alum and longtime supporter of the program, I’m excited to be in this position and have the opportunity to serve Cabell County and help make a difference in people’s lives.”

The Cabell County office is now conveniently located at 3 Chateau Grove Lane in Barboursville, creating a presence for WVU Extension in a high-traffic, high-visibility area in the center of the county.

Bringing Strader on board and opening the new office are happening just in time for summer camp season, allowing county faculty and staff to be present to help the community enroll in 4-H camp and other Extension programs. 4-H camp will return to Cabell County this year with two opportunities for youth – multi-county older camp on June 8-12 and Cabell younger camp on June 15-19.

“We have an active and engaged community here of volunteers, 4-H clubs and members, and other partners who are ready to work with us to revive our programs,” Strader said. “With the help of our partnerships with Cabell County Schools and others, I’m looking forward to trying to reach a larger percentage of our community. WVU Extension and West Virginia 4-H truly offer something for everyone.”

The WVU Extension office in Cabell County is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The office’s updated phone number is 304-948-7019. Directions, contact information and additional information can be found at extension.wvu.edu/cabell.
