West Virginia University Extension’s Grow This program is introducing a new microcredential that transforms nearly a decade of gardening education into a free, online learning experience available to anyone across the state.
The microcredential was developed by WVU Extension Grow This in partnership with the WVU College of Applied Health Sciences, with content created by WVU Extension agriculture agents. The training provides gardening knowledge in a flexible, self-paced format that helps with both personal and professional growth.
For nine years, WVU Extension Grow This has connected West Virginians with gardening expertise through virtual sessions and seasonal programming. The new online course was developed to preserve Grow This educational content and make it available statewide in a lasting online format.
“This microcredential allows us to preserve what people value most about Grow This, while making it more widely available,” Kristin McCartney, WVU Extension associate professor and public health specialist, said. “It’s a way for people to build skills, gain confidence and continue learning at their own pace.”
The course uses video instruction, visuals and interactive elements to guide participants through key concepts such as garden planning, site assessment and seasonal considerations.
Participants who complete the microcredential earn a digital badge to share online, in their email signature or on their resume. This training can support careers and interests ranging from education and community health to agriculture related work, or help expand gardening knowledge.
“Whether someone is growing food for their household or looking to apply gardening knowledge in a professional setting, this credential offers a great start,” McCartney said.
The Grow This microcredential is open to the public and free to access statewide, with content that can be adapted for a wide range of audiences, including youth programs such as 4-H as well as adult learners.
