Energy Express Ends on a High Note

The county-wide Energy Express program wrapped up on July 30th. The four Energy Express sites provided reading enrichment and literacy at Buffalo, Crum, C-K and Fort Gay communities this summer. On July 29, a county-wide community blood drive was held at Fort Gay PK8. Nineteen people donated blood - many thanks to everyone for making this worthy community service effort a reality and for a successful Energy Express program this summer. Youth Help with State's Largest Food Pantry

On July 22, 2021 our 4-H Ambassadors spent the day at the Dunlow Community Center helping with their monthly food pantry distribution, which happens to be the largest in the state of West Virginia. Many thanks to Bill and Addie Likens for all they do for this part of the county.

4-H'ers Win in State Competitions

Congratulations to members of the Whites Creek Critters 4-H Club who competed in the State 4-H Forestry and WHEP (Wildlife Habitat Education Program) Competitions in late spring. In the State 4-H Forestry Competition, Duke Parsley placed 3rd and Elijah Parsley placed 4th in the junior division. In the WHEP Competition, Duke Parsley placed 1st in the state in the junior division and Elijah Parsley and Josie Parsley tied for 3rd place. We are so proud of their accomplishments!

4-H'er Receives Charting Pin

Please help us congratulate Brenna Barnett, a Wayne County 4-H member who received her 4-H Charting Pin July 16, 2021. 4-H Charting is a personal development program that encourages 4-H'ers to see themselves as they are and to help them plan their personal goals. Brenna successfully completed her 4-H Charting Project, class and interview this summer. She will be a senior this year at Spring Valley High School. Brenna is standing with her mother Tammy Barnett, a 4-H volunteer with the Wayne County 4-H program.

4-H Member is Golden Horseshoe Winner

Please help us congratulate Duke Parsley of the Whites Creek Critters 4-H club who was recently recognized as a Golden Horse Shoe winner from Wayne County. Duke’s parents are Amanda and Duke Parsley of Lavalette. Duke was knighted at a ceremony in Charleston in late June 2021. We are very proud of Duke’s accomplishment!

Highlights from the In-Person 4-H Programs held in June

The WVU Extension Service Wayne County 4-H program directed in-person programs for youth of all ages at two different locations - Camp Mad Anthony Wayne and Cabwaylingo State Forest during the weeks of June 14 and June 21. A total of 42 youth participated in our summer day camp type program. Youth conducted nature hikes and did a wide variety of STEM activities and crafts.

Ambassadors Conduct Community Service Projects

Several of our 4-H Ambassadors spent Thursday June 24 at Cabwaylingo State Forest doing community service projects. Youth picked up trash around the camp grounds and nearby stream, decorated rocks for the Kindness Rock Garden and made bracelets for the local nursing home. Saluting 4-H Members Graduating High School

Last month we recognized our enrolled 4-H members who graduated from high school this year. Haylee Christian (below) graduated from Wayne High School with very high honors. After graduation, Haylee will attend Clark State Community College to become a judicial court reporter. She has been very active with the Wayne County 4-H Livestock program the past several years. Congratulations Haylee!

Energy Express Program starts June 22

Our Energy Express program starts on June 22. We are excited that Wayne County will have sites at the following schools: Buffalo Elementary, Ceredo-Kenova Elementary, Crum PK8 and Fort Gay PK8. The photos feature the teams working hard to get their sites ready with lots of great reading enrichment lessons and activities for the children they will serve this summer!
