A few highlights from the first session of our International Cooking series where youth “traveled” to Australia on Monday, January 27 at the Extension Office. Youth had the opportunity to make Australian mince pies, lamingtons (a type of cake) and try Vegemite, a popular food spread in Australia. Enjoy the pictures! A few highlights from the recent C-K Wonders 4-H Club that met at the C-K Library on Saturday, January 25. Club members played Pictionary, created Valentine cards for local veterans and worked on posters for the State 4-H Poster Contest. Wayne County has been approved for four Energy Express sites. The sites will be located at Buffalo Elementary, C-K Elementary, Fort Gay PrK-8, and Lavalette Elementary schools.

We are in need of mentors and community coordinators! We will be hiring 20 AmeriCorps Mentors and four AmeriCorps Community Coordinators.

The Regional State 4-H Air Rifle Competition was held in Wayne on January 11, 2020. Results will be available later this month. Congratulations to all our youth on a job well done! Please help us thank our coaches and young adults for their countless hours of dedication and commitment to our 4-H Shooting Sports program! They have served weekly since October training youth in the shooting sports discipline of air rifle. They include (l-r): Andrew Kelley and Chase Smith, young adults; and Tim Smith, Austin Marshall, Gordon Fields and Bruce Crockett, all certified air rifle instructors. Last evening December 17, 2019, the Whites Creek Critters 4-H Club sang Christmas carols at the Wayne Nursing Home to spread some holiday cheer this season! To learn more about this and other 4-H Clubs in the county, please contact our office at 304-272-6839.

Using the Learning to Lead 4-H Project, interested teens spent part of their Thanksgiving break at the Extension Office to gain leadership skills in a fun and hands-on way. Teens did a leadership assessment and learned about decision-making, teamwork and communication skills. The teens include (l-r): Ayden Copley, Simon Ballengee, Rebekah Napier, Riley Copley, McKenzie Cassells, Benji Chute and Kyle Wrobleski. Chase Smith (far left, bottom row) of the Whites Creek Critters 4-H Club of Prichard was one of several delegates from the WV 4-H Program to attend National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Georgia in late November. On December 7, the Wayne County 4-H Beef Quiz Bowl teams competed at the state contest at Stonewall Resort. The junior teams finished 9th and 17th with the senior team finishing a county best of 4th. The senior team was made up of three juniors and a senior. Congratulations to our 4-H members on a job well done!
