WVU Extension encourages West Virginia families to take 'bar of soap challenge'

As many West Virginia families continue to practice social distancing, identifying innovative and unique activities can be exhausting. WVU Extension Service has the solution: gather up those household items, toys and tools, and be a part of the Rube Goldberg ‘Bar of Soap Video Challenge.’

WVU Extension Service and Mylan STEMCARE encourage West Virginia families to participate in the Rube Goldberg Bar of Soap Video Challenge. This competition is open to families from all over the world to work together to build a Rube Goldberg machine that, after a chain reaction of events (10-20 total steps), drops a bar of soap into someone’s hands.
To help sweeten the competition, WVU Extension Service and Mylan STEMCARE are encouraging West Virginia families to participate in the competition with a chance to win prizes, including the first-place winner who will receive a LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Robot Kit. Additionally, participating families will receive some fun WVU branded items (while supplies last). Families also are encouraged to enter the official Rube Goldberg competition where they will have a chance to win additional prizes.

“This is great way for families to participate in a fun, challenging activity that encourages trial and error, while teaching important STEM skills,” said Jennifer Robertson Honecker, associate professor and STEM Specialist, WVU Extension Service, said. “My family and I had a blast putting ours together, so I hope our West Virginia families will grab that bar of soap and start creating their winning Rube Goldberg machine.”

Youths and families from West Virginia are eligible to compete in the WVU Extension Service and Mylan STEMCARE competition. More information, including how to submit your video, can found on the WVU Extension Service STEMCARE site. The Rube Goldberg Challenge is open to families and individuals all over the world.
