Morgantown, W.Va. — West Virginia University Extension Safety and Health Extension’s National Resource Center Occupational Safety and Health Training Institute Education Center will be offering two OSHA education courses to assist employers—particularly small businesses—in ensuring their business is in compliance with OSHA’s annual reporting requirements.

The courses, OSHA 7845: Recordkeeping and OSHA 7510: Introduction to OSHA for Small Business, will be held on Feb. 7 and Feb. 28, respectively. Both courses will be held virtually, and advance registration is required with the NRC-WVU OTIEC.

“It’s important for small business employers to understand OSHA regulations to promote a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, in addition to being able to provide accurate reporting to avoid penalties,” Amanda Mason, WVU Extension Safety and Health Extension specialist and course instructor, said. “Most employers with 20 or more employees are required to submit OSHA Form 300A by March 2, so we are pleased to offer these courses ahead of that deadline.”

The OSHA 7845: Recordkeeping course will cover requirements for maintaining and posting records of occupational injuries and illnesses, as well as how to appropriately report specific cases to OSHA. After completing the course, participants will be able to identify OSHA requirements for recordkeeping, posting and reporting. They also will know how to accurately complete OSHA Form 300: Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses, OSHA Form 300A: Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses, and OSHA Form 301: Injury and Illness Incident Report. The cost of the course is $150.

Owners and managers of small businesses also may enroll in the OSHA 7510: Introduction to OSHA for Small Business course. This course serves as an introduction to OSHA and helps participants gain an understanding of OSHA operations and procedures, in addition to teaching them how they can work with OSHA to prevent or reduce injuries and illnesses in their workplaces. During the course, the instructor will cover OSHA’s background, standards, the inspection process, how to implement a safety and health program, and the assistance that is available to small businesses. The cost for this course is $225.

“Through our alliance agreement with the Charleston Area Office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the West Virginia OSHA Area Director will participate in both courses,” Brandon C. Takacs, former WVU Extension Specialist and past National Resource Center OSHA Training Institute Education Center director, said. “This alliance represents our collaborative commitment and effort to work directly with OSHA to provide safety and health information, guidance and training to OSHA Training Institute Education Center participants and to improve the safety of workers in West Virginia and OSHA Region III--which additionally includes Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and District of Columbia.”
