It’s time to fly our West Virginia University flags in Fairlea at the 2024 State Fair of West Virginia. Together, WVU and WVU Extension will be showcasing the best of our state’s flagship during the Fair on Aug. 8-17.

Whether you are a graduate of the University, a current or past 4-H’er, a Mountaineer fan or someone who enjoys learning new things, between the exhibits, youth livestock and 4-H projects, gardening showcases and more, there is something for everyone as part of the WVU experience.

Each year, youths from around the state spend countless hours raising animals for show or creating the perfect 4-H project for that coveted blue ribbon. WVU and WVU Extension collaborate to bring the gold and blue Mountaineer spirit and engaging activities for visitors of all ages.

The WVU Building will feature a rotating selection of the University’s programs and people. Visitors can learn more from experts and participate in demonstrations from faculty and staff on topics of broad interest, such as healthy recipes, engaging STEM activities, wildlife, creative arts and more.

Fairgoers also can grab a fun photo, share their WVU connection, test their food safety skills/knowledge or learn more about becoming a Mountaineer at one of WVU’s three campuses.

President Gordon Gee will join Mountaineer Mascot Braden Adkins to greet visitors in the WVU Building and other locations at the Fair on Friday, Aug. 9.

WVU Extension agents and other volunteers coordinate the youth livestock events, which showcase the hard work of hundreds of 4-H’ers and FFA members, many who will use the money raised to continue post-secondary education and training. A full schedule of livestock events can be found on the Fair’s website. 4-H exhibits ranging from photography and cooking to gardening and entomology will be on display at the Cecil H. Underwood Youth Center.

The WVU Master Gardener demonstration garden, located adjacent to the WVU Building, is a must see. Each year the master gardeners volunteer their time to create a colorful garden filled with flowers, shrubs and fruit-bearing trees. After taking a stroll through the garden, visitors are encouraged to stop by the high tunnel to learn about unique varieties of garden plants that produce well in West Virginia.

The WVU Building is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, except for the last day of the fair (Aug. 17) when it closes at 5 p.m. WVU-themed prize drawings take place at noon and 5 p.m. daily. WVU Extension 4-H exhibits will be on display from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Visitors wanting to stock up on WVU apparel and gifts can visit the WVU gear shop by Bond’s Tailgaters of Vienna to purchase items. The “shop,” located in the WVU Building, is open daily during regular building hours.
