MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU Extension Fire Service Extension announced that its Junior Firefighter Camp previously scheduled for June 27-July 2 2020, has been canceled.
“We know our campers look forward to this event each year, and we certainly share in their disappointment. But, given the circumstances related to the coronavirus pandemic, our first priority is the safety and health of our campers, families, volunteers and staff,” Mark Lambert, director, WVU Extension Fire Service, said. “This pandemic is a reminder of the tireless and courageous work of our first responders in times of crisis. And, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of trainings and programs, like our Junior Firefighter Camp, to our communities. We will continue to provide opportunities for these young people to engage in firefighter training.”
Students who have already paid for the 2020 camp will be contacted in the coming weeks regarding a refund or payment toward next year’s camp, which has already been scheduled for June 26 through July 1, 2021 at the Fire Service Training Academy in Weston, West Virginia.
Additionally, the Fire Extension staff is exploring opportunities to bring youths together for a mini camp later this year, as well as an “alumni” camp for those who have previously attended our camp (including those who age out of the program in 2020), which would be held in 2021.
