West Virginia University scholars will join other mining and reclamation experts to provide the latest updates on regulations and practices during a symposium hosted by WVU and the West Virginia Mine Drainage Task Force.
The event will be held March 26-27 in Morgantown at the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place.
“This is an annual meeting where prominent researchers in reclamation and mine drainage can present their findings,” said Jeff Skousen , professor of soil science in the WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design and WVU Extension Service land reclamation specialist. “The information presented here can be applied to common issues throughout the nation, including active and abandoned mines. Industry representatives also will be sharing the results of techniques they have applied at their own mine sites.”
Speakers will include experts in industry, government and higher education. Scientists from the WVU Davis College, WVU Extension Service and the WVU Energy Institute’s National Research Center for Coal and Energy will share the results of their studies, ranging in topic from mine drainage, surface and underground mining, and reclamation techniques.
“It’s an honor for us at West Virginia University, the city of Morgantown and the state of West Virginia to host this symposium,” said Skousen. “Given the current attention to the state’s energy industry, this is the perfect time for scientists, regulators and the industry to share their knowledge.”
The meeting is expected to draw approximately 250 attendees from across the United States and neighboring countries.
