Know Your State 4-H Project Area

Sometime in the late 1980s the 4-H Extension Agent in Putnam County, Dorothy Brown collaborated with Putnam County teachers Lena Young and Patricia Jefferies to create a "Know Your State" 4-H enrichment project. Aimed at elementary-aged youth, this county-based 4-H booklet provided activities that introduced youth to state symbols, geography, points of interest, industry, and history. Often this curriculum was used in school classrooms for teachers to supplement and practice the information that was taught in the textbook. Over the decades the Know Your State booklet was passed amongst county Extension Offices and tailored locally to meet the needs of the classroom teachers utilizing the curriculum. Today it is estimated that there are about a dozen versions of Know Your State circulating in county offices.
