Healthy Halloween Snack Spooktacular

Get your kids in the spooky season spirit with these easy and healthy recipes. Make things even more fun by letting them help you in the kitchen!

  • Wash your hands at the beginning and throughout the cooking process.
  • Children should ask for permission before using appliances and sharp knives.

Mummy Muffin Pizzas

Ingredients
  • 4 whole-grain English muffins
  • 1 jar pizza sauce
  • 1 small can, sliced olives
  • 2 tablespoons green pepper, diced
  • 4 sticks, mozzarella string cheese
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
  2. Split English muffins. Cover each half with pizza sauce.
  3. Place two olive slices on the muffin for the mummy’s eyes. Fill center of olive slice with green pepper for pupils. Use pepper pieces to make other facial features, if desired.
  4. Pull apart cheese sticks into thin strips. Layer on top of muffin to create mummy wrap.
  5. Bake on a greased sheet pan for 5 to 8 minutes or until cheese is bubbly and muffins are toasted.
Serving size: 2 muffin halves


String Cheese Witches’ Brooms

Ingredients
  • 4 sticks, mozzarella string cheese
  • 8 pretzel sticks
  • 8 chives
Directions
  1. Cut cheese sticks in half horizontally.
  2. Peel one end of each half to make broom bristles.
  3. Stick pretzel stick into non-peeled ends of cheese stick halves.
  4. Tie chives around bristles. 

Clementine Pumpkins

  • 8 clementines
  • 2 stalks of celery
Directions
  1. Cut cheese sticks in half horizontally.
  2. Peel one end of each half to make broom bristles.
  3. Stick pretzel stick into non-peeled ends of cheese stick halves.
  4. Tie chives around bristles. 

Baked Halloween Tortilla Chips

Ingredients
  • 10 whole-grain tortillas
  • Halloween cookie cutters
  • Cooking spray
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 400 F.
  2. Wrap tortillas in a damp paper towel and microwave tortillas for 30 seconds with a damp paper towel. This will make them easier to cut.
  3. Cut tortillas into fun shapes with Halloween cookie cutters. Alternatively, divide into wedges with a knife.
  4. Spray baking sheet with cooking spray. Put tortilla cut-outs on the sheet. Spray tops of tortillas with cooking spray. Lightly salt. 
  5. Bake tortilla chips for 10 minutes or until chips are nicely browned.

Zombie Brains Dip (Chunky Guacamole)

Ingredients
  • 2 medium avocados, peeled and seeded
  • 2 teaspoons lime juice• 2 tablespoons onion, minced
  • 1 or 2 small peppers, any variety
  • 1 medium tomato, diced
  • 2 tablespoons cilantro, chopped
Directions
  1. Mash avocados and combine with lime juice.
  2. Stir in remaining ingredients. Serve immediately with homemade baked tortilla chips.
  3. To store, cover guacamole with plastic wrap by placing wrap directly on dip (air will oxidize the avocado and turn it brown in color).
