Wayne County Horse Program

Two Wayne County Horse Shows Set for 2022

Youth do not need to be enrolled in 4-H to participate in either show. Both shows will held at the Horse Show Arena (Shirley Burgess Park – Route 152) north of Wayne. Negative Coggins is required for all horse shown. For more information, please contact our office at 304-272-6839.

Open Horse Show

The annual Wayne County Fair Open Horse Show will be held Saturday, July 30. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., and the show starts at 10 a.m. Below are a list of classes. The show will follow any local and state COVID guidelines. 

Open Show Classes

  • Open Walk & Favorite Gait
  • 4-H Walk & Favorite Gait
  • Small Fry Walk & Favorite Gait
  • English Walk/ Trot
  • Trail Pleasure
  • Western Walk/ Jog

  • Western Horsemanship
  • Country Pleasure
  • Western Pleasure
  • English Equitation 
  • English Pleasure
  • Men's Pleasure
  • Ride a Buck
  • Youth Walk & Favorite Gait 
  • Trail Non-Gaited/ Gaited
  • Open Barrels 

The following classes are any breed eligible (gaited/non-gaited):

  • 4-H Showmanship

  • Men’s Pleasure

Open Show Rules

  1. Admission $5 for spectators with five yrs are under FREE.
  2. Entry fee is $5 per class or pay $50 for entry to an unlimited number of classes.
  3. Approved Equestrian Riding Helmets are required for youth exhibitors (17 yrs and under)
  4. Judges decisions are final.
  5. Poorly controlled animals will be excused from show grounds.
  6. Must show valid negative Coggins at time of registration or any time requested.
  7. No pads or chains on horses on show grounds.
  8. NO refunds for any reason.
  9. No alcohol or controlled substances permitted on show grounds.
  10. Poor sportsmanship will result in dismissal from show grounds.
  11. NO youth (17 and under) permitted to exhibit or handle stallions on show grounds.
  12. NO DOGS will be permitted on the show grounds.


September Fun Show

A Fun Show will be held Saturday, September 10. Registration is 12 p.m. (Noon); Show starts at 1 p.m. Below is a complete list of classes. The show will adhere to any local and state COVID guidelines. 

Fun Show Classes

  • Costume Class
  • Lead Line; rider must be 12 yrs and under
  • Egg & Spoon; walk/trot or rack
  • Ribbon Race; teams of two riders and two horses
  • Catalog Race
  • Barrel Race
  • Flag Race
  • Boot Pick-up
  • Baby Bottle – teams of two riders on one horse
  • Soccer – first horse to move ball from start line to goal wins
  • Musical Stalls
  • Pole Bending
  • Pony Express Trail Challenge (timed obstacle course)
  • Ride A Buck; walk/trot or rack
  • Apple bobbing – first horse to bite apple while floating in bucket of water wins

Fun Show Rules

West Virginia & Other States Health Requirements for Wayne County Horse Shows

(Animal Health Division, W.Va. Department of Agriculture)

Horses from West Virginia: Must be uniquely identified and have a negative Coggin’s test (from a US official laboratory) within the last 12 months.

Horses from other states: Must be uniquely identified, accompanied by an approved CVI health certificate from the state of origin prior to show, and a negative Coggin’s test (from a US official laboratory) within the last 12 months.

  • Again a negative Coggins is required per horse for our Open Show and Fun Shows.
