The Certified Safety Specialist – Maritime (CSS-M) Program is a focused professional development certificate designed to address the distinct and often high-risk safety challenges found in maritime environments. Delivered by WVU Safety and Health Extension, this program equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills to manage workplace safety across shipyards, marine terminals, vessel operations, and other maritime settings.

Tailored for safety professionals, supervisors, managers, and others responsible for occupational safety in the maritime industry, the CSS-M program emphasizes regulatory compliance, hazard control, emergency preparedness, and the development of comprehensive maritime safety programs.


Program Highlights:

  • Emphasizes OSHA 29 CFR Part 1915, 1917, and 1918 standards applicable to maritime operations
  • Core topics include:
    • Shipyard safety and confined space entry
    • Hazard communication and chemical safety
    • Fall protection on vessels and docks
    • Marine cargo handling and material movement
    • Lockout/tagout procedures and hot work safety
    • Personal protective equipment (PPE) in maritime environments
  • Features case studies, interactive training, and assessments
  • Helps professionals develop, implement, and evaluate maritime-specific safety programs

Format:

Courses are available in both in-person and virtual formats to accommodate working professionals and employers.
Virtual attendance for OTIEC courses is limited to individuals who live or work in OSHA Region III (WV, PA, VA, DE, MD, DC).

Program Outcome:
