Oil & Gas Fatality Map

About the Map

The Oil and Gas Fatality Map was created by West Virginia University – Safety and Health Extension to increase awareness and research efforts within the industry by compiling fatality related information.

The map pinpoints each fatality between the years of 2004 to 2018 and provides information on:

  • Death;
  • Date;
  • Employer;
  • City, State;
  • Incident Description;
  • SIC Code;
  • Source; and
  • OSHA Accident Investigation Link, if available.

The map also includes an overlay of the separate Shale plays. The fatality data is limited to the Appalachian Basin, which includes Marcellus and Utica Shales.

Data has been obtained through review of OSHA Accident Investigations, OSHA’s Weekly Fatality Reports, and The Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Fatalities will not be posted until confirmed by a credible source.

If you are aware of a recent work-related oil and gas fatality, not listed on the fatality map please contact us to report the incident.
