Statewide Virtual 4-H Programs for Summer 2021

West Virginia 4-H is excited to announce our Summer 2021 virtual programming experiences that will launch in June. These virtual 4-H experiences will focus on different topic areas (Civic Engagement, Healthy Living, and STEM). The programs will meet daily for five sessions or meet weekly for four sessions. Do not hesitate to register. We anticipate these programs to fill quickly.

These summer 4-H virtual experiences are open to any youths. Be sure to read each program description to determine which age groups are invited to participate. Each program various in audience age range. Some programs are designed for Cloverbuds (any youths with birthdates between October 1, 2012, and June 30, 2015), while others are geared towards youths who will be 9 years old or older by September 30, 2021.

All of our virtual summer programming options have a small fee to allow us to provide a program kit of supplies for youths to engage in hands-on activities at home with the instructors during each session. There are scholarships available for youths to participate in all of our virtual summer programs.

How Do I Sign Up?

Choose the virtual 4-H experience that interests you, then register online through ZSuite (4h.zsuite.org).

Register in 4-H ZSuite
If you are a current 4-H member:
  • Log into your 4h.zsuite.org account under the primary adult account.
  • Select "Events" to see all of the open event registrations. Since there are many events, it may work best to type the name of the program into the event search bar.
  • You can also view events on the "calendar" by looking for the start date.
If you are not currently enrolled in 4-H:
  • There are external links for registering for these programs in the descriptions below.

Does your child love to help around the house? Then this virtual Cloverbud Quest is for them! Join us in the kitchen and around your home as your child learns about kitchen safety, cooking methods, nutrition, money matters and sewing.

  • Age - Any child with birthdates between October 1, 2012, and June 30, 2015

Plants & Animals

If your child enjoys learning about plants and animals, then this virtual Cloverbud Quest is for them! Join us for your child to learn about what plants need to grow, life on the farm, how to properly care for their pets and so much more!

Recycled Assorted Color Plastic

Your child can learn what they can do to help recycle and how recycling helps other things that live in the world in this virtual Cloverbud Quest. The program is designed to help your child learn about the effects of throwing things away and how, in many cases, discarded items can be reused as well as recycled.

  • Age - Any child with birthdates between October 1, 2012, and June 30, 2015

STEM Lit-to-Go!

Your child can develop their STEM and literacy skills in this Cloverbud Quest as they engage in hands-on STEM activities and read books. Through a variety of engaging topics, including space, sound, and nature, your child will explore key STEM concepts, such as the engineering design process and conducting investigations. Each session will provide your child with a hands-on STEM experience and multiple opportunities for them to read, write, speak and listen about their experience.

  • Age - Any child with birthdates between October 1, 2012, and June 30, 2015

Get Started in Art

If your child enjoys being creative, then this might be the program for them! The Art Expedition will explore basic elements of visual art through activities on color, line, space, balance and more. Participants will create and share their own works of art. This expedition can support youths who are working on a Get Started In Art project. Any youth are welcome!

Together Towards Tomorrow

This expedition aims to help kids acquire a diverse and knowledgeable worldview. Through hands-on activities and discussions, participants will think about the world around them, from potential language barriers to modern conveniences that kids might take for granted. Participants can open their eyes to explore the world and its beauty without even leaving West Virginia.

Each program meets daily via Zoom on Monday through Friday for five total sessions. There will be activities for the member to complete at home between Zoom meetings. Participants will receive a kit with supplies to engage in hands-on activities at home with the instructors during each meeting.

West Virginia – Know Your State

Is your child curious about the Mountain State? Does your child love all things West Virginia? The Know Your State Expedition will explore West Virginia’s geography, economics, government, and history. This expedition can support youth who are working on a Know Your State 4-H project. Any youths are welcome!

Welcome to 4-H!

Virtual 4-H Healthy Living Journeys

Charting

The West Virginia 4-H Charting Program is a personal development program for youths in ninth grade or above. The Charting program strives to encourage 4-H’ers to see themselves as they are and to help them plan their personal goals. Program topics include Self-Understanding, Critical Thinking and Decision Making, Communication, Leadership, and Where Am I Going? The group of 4-H’ers that a person Charts with, along with the instructors, provides a safe place to share questions, concerns and successes. The goals of the Charting program are reached by thoughtfully filling out the Charting book, participating in Charting classes and being interviewed by an Extension Agent and/or Charting instructor.

Each program meets daily via Zoom on Monday through Friday for five total sessions. Through Charting, many people strengthen old friendships and make new ones that will last for years. There will be activities for the member(s) to complete at home between Zoom meetings. Participants will receive a kit with Charting supplies to engage in hands-on activities at home with the instructors during each meeting.

  • Age — 4-H Members who have completed the 9th grade and are enrolled in the 4-H Charting program through their local Extension office

Cooking

If your child enjoys helping around the kitchen, join us for a live cooking and skill-building journey. Participants will build on basic skills of food preparation, selection, safety, and science. This journey can support youth who are working on a 4-H Cooking project. The program is open to any interested youths.

Each program meets daily via Zoom from Monday through Friday for five total sessions. There will be activities for the members to complete at home with their families between Zoom meetings. Participants will receive a kit with cooking equipment of their own to cook along with the instructors during each meeting.

GEM - Get Experience in Mindfulness

Could your child benefit from learning how to manage their stress better? If so, the GEM: Get Experience in Mindfulness Journey will teach your child practical and interactive mindfulness-based activities. Journey topics include Intentions and Goal Setting, Awareness and Attention, Self-care: Stress Reduction and Relaxation, Communication and Relationships, and Gratitude and Acceptance. Among other things, participants of the program will learn what mindfulness is and how to integrate it into their daily lives.

Aspire to be Healthy

This journey will focus on life skills and decision-making development. Substance misuse is an important topic for our kids to discuss so they can make healthy life choices. The program aims to instill in youth participants the confidence and communication skills necessary to develop the internal strength to resist risky behaviors.

STEM Special Interest Camps

Mars Base Camp

The race to land humans on Mars is on! In this 4-week virtual Special Interest camp, kids will explore sending a mission to Mars with Mars Base Camp. The camp will include four hands-on activities that are completed over four camp meetings. The activities teach kids STEM skills like mechanical engineering, physics, computer science, and agriculture.

Registered participants will be mailed a kit that includes the hands-on activity materials. This camp is for WV youth who will be enrolled in 3rd - 6th grade for the 2021-2022 school year. We will use the Zoom platform to host the camp meetings. Space is limited, register today!

Learn to Code - Music and Animation

In this 4-week virtual camp, youth will learn basic coding concepts as they make music videos and animation using CS First and Scratch. The camp is designed for new and beginner coders. The camp will also include hands-on activities and projects.

EcoAdventures

In this 4-week virtual camp, youth will learn about the environment and regional ecology in fun and exciting ways. The camp is designed for youth interested in exploring the outdoors. The camp will include hands-on activities and projects such as “build your own cattail boat” and “DIY water filters.”

TinkerCAD

In this four-week virtual camp, youth will learn how to create 3D objects in TinkerCAD. They will learn to design objects using both a drag-and-drop program and CAD (computer-aided design) techniques. Youth will design their own unique objects such as their coins and charm bracelets.

The Magic of Chemistry Camp

In this four-week virtual camp, youth will learn about the nature of science while conducting a series of experiments and chemical reactions. The camp will include hands-on activities on topics such as polymers, glow-in-the-dark reactions, intermolecular forces, slime, and more.

Camp Invention

In this four-week virtual camp, youth will learn about the engineering design process to plan and build their own inventions. Each week will focus on a different branch of engineering, including mechanical, aerospace, biomedical, chemical and electrical.

Space Camp

In this four-week virtual camp, youth will explore astronomy, the science of space! Topics will include our solar system, stars and constellations, and space travel. Each day will feature hands-on activities with projects such as “build your own model telescope” and “pocket solar system.”

Micro:Bit Coding and Physical Computing

In this four-week virtual camp, youth will learn to program their own Micro:bit and how to automate simple physical computing processes. The camp is designed for both new and experienced coders where they will program hardware and create their own programs. During this camp, youth will complete activities such as creating a flappy bird-like game and their own sensor.

Registered participants will be mailed a kit that includes a microprocessor, servo motor, and other materials to complete the hands-on coding activities. This camp is for WV youth who will be enrolled in 7th through 12th grade for the 2021-2022 school year. We will use the Zoom platform to host the camp meetings. Space is limited, register today!

Free Virtual Summer STEM Classes 

Join WVU Extension 4-H every Wednesday in June and July from 1:00 – 2:00 PM as we run free STEM activities online. Each week will feature a fun activity on various STEM topics using materials that can be found around the house. Kids will learn how to make a slingshot rocket, the science behind slime, and so much more. Additionally, we will randomly draw the name of one family each week that attended that day’s activity and mail them a fun STEM prize! Registration and participation are free. Attend as many or as few classes as you like. Registered participants be sent a schedule in early June that includes the calendar of activities and a list of suggested materials, so your child can follow along.
