How do you join?

The first step is to contact your county office and ask about the training program. The WVU Extension Master Gardener Program is offered through our local WVU Extension offices. The training program is currently an online-hybrid platform. You will still need to contact your local WVU Extension office to go over the registration, fees, paperwork and how to get the manuals.

The Winter/Spring 2026 training series will run from January 8 until May 14. Classes will be held every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Over the course of the 18-session online training program, you will receive 54 hours of instruction in a variety of topics, including botany, plant propagation, entomology, pesticides and pest management, plant disease, soil science and nutritional management, turfgrass management, vegetable gardening, tree fruits, small fruit, pruning, landscape design, woody ornamentals, indoor plants, herbaceous plants, garden wildlife management and West Virginia native plants. From there, pass a test and complete 40 hours of initial volunteer work and you’ll have earned the right to call yourself a WVU Extension Master Gardener.

How do you become a Master Gardener?

The WVU Extension Master Gardener Program is offered through our local WVU Extension offices. The training program is currently an online-hybrid platform. You will still need to email the Kanawha County Master Gardener records coordinator at sandbkcemga@yahoo.com to learn about how to register, fees, orientation, paperwork, and about the course training manuals and or thumb drive.

The Winter/Spring 2026 training series is from January 8 until April 23, 2026. Classes will be held virtually every Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.

Over the course of the 16-session online training program, you will receive 48 hours of instruction in a variety of topics, including botany, plant propagation, entomology, pesticides and pest management, plant disease, soil science and nutritional management, turfgrass management, vegetable gardening, tree fruits, small fruit, pruning, landscape design, woody ornamentals, indoor plants, herbaceous plants, garden wildlife management and West Virginia native plants.

Following the last class, you will pass a final test and complete 40 hours of initial volunteer work to be considered a WVU Extension Master Gardener. This is a statewide program with class presentations by noted professors and professionals.

As noted above, the Winter/Spring 2026 training series will run from January 8 to April 23, 2026. Classes will be held every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. On Saturday, January 3, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. until noon, there will be an orientation at the Equities Building location in downtown Charleston, West Virginia, to welcome new folks with the overall program and to get acquainted with the Kanawha County Master Gardeners.
