How to Have a great Valentine's Day on a budget

Three homemade heart cards lying on a table.

Have you ever heard that nothing says romance like a budget? Probably not. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a nice Valentine’s Day with your special someone, even while watching your spending! If you’re looking for ways to make Valentine’s Day special without breaking the bank, there are plenty of ways to make it more affordable without making it less special.

Although not having to cook on date night can be appealing, eating out can be expensive. If you’re trying to save money, making your meal at home may be your best choice. To keep it fun, make cooking dinner a part of date night, then enjoy the meal together. You can try a new recipe or a tried-and-true favorite, or keep it Valentine’s Day themed and make a heart-shaped pizza! If you want to treat yourselves, splurge on a store-bought dessert instead.

Dinner tends to be the most expensive meal, so if you really want to eat out, consider going for a different meal. Breakfast, lunch, or even brunch can be a more affordable option while being just as enjoyable. It may even be less busy, and you may not have to wait as long for a table!

Another option is to create a movie date night at home. Movie tickets are expensive, and you can easily find something you want to watch at home, whether it’s through streaming or your television provider. There are also multiple free streaming services available to choose from. Pick up some popcorn and boxed candy, and you have the perfect movie night at home. Bonus – you can wear your favorite pajamas!

Gifts don’t have to be expensive to be heartfelt. Buying someone’s favorite candy can be a nice gift that doesn’t bust your budget. It shows that you know and care about them, and you want to do something nice. Don’t overlook the value of a nice homemade gift, either. You could print and frame a picture of you together, make a batch of cookies, or even write a letter with all your favorite things about them. There are so many options for meaningful gifts that don’t break the bank, and you can be as creative as you want.

Another great gift option is to do an activity together. Buy some inexpensive canvases and paint to have a paint night at home. Go on a walk or hike. Have a picnic or take a drive. Have a game night complete with winner bragging rights. Work a puzzle. Inexpensive activity options are limitless. Use your creativity and think about what you enjoy as a couple but don’t always have the time to do, then make it your Valentine’s Day celebration.

When people think of Valentine’s Day, they often think of an expensive dinner out, a dozen red roses, and a huge box of chocolates. While there’s nothing wrong with those things, all you really need for a great holiday is someone you care about, a little creativity, and some quality time together. And it doesn’t have to be a significant other— grab a friend or family member and celebrate anyway!
