Registration is open for the Multi-County 4-H Roundup. This event is for both Mineral and Hampshire County 4-H members. Enrolled 4-H members may register online. It will take place April 3 at 6 p.m. at Potomac State College Science Hall. Below are all the contest areas; If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the WVU Mineral County Extension Office at 304-788-3621.
CONTEST AREAS
Art Exhibit - This opportunity will be designed to help develop creativity and to provide an area for young artists to display their work. Competition will include Junior and Senior divisions in each of the five categories:
- Sculpture
- Pencil/charcoal/pen & ink
- Crayon/paints/pastels
- Miscellaneous
All entries must be original work of the 4-H member. Members may submit only three (3) entries per category. All drawings and paintings must be mounted on a larger sheet of heavier material. Each entry must be tagged on the back of the entry with name, club, age, and address.
Creative Writing Contest - Here's a way to express yourself through the written word. Through this exhibition we encourage 4-H members to express their thoughts, feelings, understandings, and impressions through written media. Participants will submit their completed work at the beginning of Roundup on April 3. Members may submit a Short Story, Essay, or Poetry. Entries must be an original work by the 4-H member and may not be more than 1,000 words. Format should be Microsoft Word or PDF document, 12 point font, single-spaced, 1'' margins, 8.5 x 11 size page.
Engineering Challenge - This fun competition gives you the chance to flex those “problem solving” muscles! Specific rules and limits of each project will be announced and followed at the time of the competition. There will be both a Junior and a Senior division. Members can choose from three categories:
- Individual: one 4-H member will complete the challenge without additional help from others
- Team: two (2) 4-H members will complete the challenge without additional help from others.
- Group: 3-5 (maximum) 4-H members will complete the challenge without additional help from others.
2020 Challenge will be to build a paper table. All supplies will be provided. Judges’ decisions will be final.
Incredible Salads Contest - Participants are to research and prepare a salad recipe from scratch on site. Participants will bring necessary materials and items with them to prepare their salads. Please bring cooler for refrigerated ingredients. Participant will provide two complete recipe cards. Categories to choose from are as follows:
- Tossed Salad
- Fruit Salad
- Jello Salad
- Miscellaneous
Cupcake Wars - Participants will bake six cupcakes at home. They will bring the undecorated cupcakes with them to decorate at the competition. They will then choose their three (3) best cupcakes to be judged on taste and appearance. Participants are responsible for bringing all materials they need for decorating and keeping materials cold. Participants will need to bring two recipe cards.
Cookie Bake-Off - provides an opportunity for 4-H members to test their baking skills with others in the county. A 4-H member is only allowed to enter once. Each entry must consist of three (3) dozen homemade cookies (any kind, no mixes or refrigerated dough) and two recipe cards(one for registration and one for the judge). Recipes should be written on 3 x 5 inch index cards.
Cloverbuds are allowed to participate in the 4-H Pledge, Art Show, Engineering
Challenge, and Cupcake Wars. They will not be competing against one another.
