With a drive to make a difference and strong community ties, Angela Lawrence joined West Virginia University Extension as an Extension instructor and Family and Community Development agent for Berkeley and Jefferson counties, effective August 17.
A 15-year resident of the area, Lawrence is ready to hit the ground running with educational programming and resources to serve the families and businesses in her communities.
As a first-generation college graduate and after working in higher education at various points throughout her career, Lawrence realized higher education is where she wanted to be. So, when the family and community development position became available, Lawrence knew it was meant for her.
“We are excited to have Angela join the WVU Extension team,” Tony Michael, program director, WVU Extension Family and Community Development said. “Angela’s background and passion for community education will be important as we look to meet current and emerging needs.”
Lawrence obtained her bachelor’s degree from Shepherd University and her master’s degree in social work from West Virginia University. In addition to her educational background, she is a licensed graduate social worker.
As the Berkeley and Jefferson County family and community development agent, Lawrence looks forward to bringing positive change to the area, particularly among the underserved populations. By strengthening community relationships, she plans to develop sustainable programming, mainly centered around the topic of social and emotional health, that can be used by individuals and organizations alike.
“I truly believe that education is empowerment,” Lawrence said. “As the new family and community development agent, I plan to listen to the communities’ needs. And, then I can develop educational programming to meet those needs, allowing adults and youths to carry out healthier more fulfilling lives.”
